“Nkrumah Took Our Lands, Promised Development But Never Delivered” – Okyehene Reveals
Amoatia Ofori Panin II, the Okyehene, disclosed a broken promise made by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and numerous citizens of Ghana were surprised upon viewing the video.
During his speech at his 25th anniversary celebration this weekend, Okyehene mentioned that Nkrumah had made a commitment to utilize the resources in the region, such as land and wealth, for the development of Accra, the capital city.
The Eastern Region was assured of significant development following the modernization of its sister city, Accra. Okyehene expressed disappointment that this promise had not been fulfilled. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah addressed the chiefs, informing them of his plan to utilize their lands and funds for the development of Accra.
He assured them that once this was completed, he would then focus on developing their village. This statement was untrue. “We have waited for over 70 years, yet that commitment remains unmet,” he expressed regret.
The concerns raised by Okyehene underscore the increasing disparity in development between regions and Accra. While Accra has made significant strides in infrastructure development pertaining to roads, businesses, and government services, the same level of progress is not evident in other regions, including the Eastern Region.
He stated that the ongoing development deficit in the area has long been a source of dissatisfaction that continues to impact the residents of Akyem Abuakwa.
Numerous Ghanaians who viewed the video of the Okyehene’s address promptly shared their opinions on the matter. Several individuals concurred that Nkrumah disappointed the Akyem community by not delivering on his commitments to the Eastern Region.
Others have highlighted the importance of decentralization in promoting nationwide development. “Decentralization is vital for national development, and avoiding centralizing everything in Accra is crucial,” commented one observer.
The Okyehene’s advocacy for decentralization aligns with the aspirations of numerous Ghanaians, emphasizing regional development as imperative for the advancement of the entire nation. This serves as a reminder to prioritize balanced development across all regions of Ghana to prevent any community from being left behind in the nation’s progress.
