Suhum MP clarifi on his decision to withdraw as an independent candidate
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament representing the Suhum constituency, Oboafo Kwadwo Asante, has refuted allegations that he has withdrawn his intention to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 election.
Mr. Asante affirmed his dedication and readiness to represent his constituents, stating, “I am running as an independent candidate.” I have not stated that I have withdrawn my intention to run as an independent candidate. I am unaware of the origin of the item.
I received numerous calls from Suhum, prompting me to return to the community to resume my door-to-door campaign. “It is a common practice, but I am now contesting again,” he stated during an interview on Accra-based Onua TV.
The clarification follows a recent announcement by the NPP parliamentary caucus that they are actively engaged in efforts to reconcile with MPs who have decided to run as independent candidates.
Oboafo Asante had announced his decision to run as an independent candidate on September 2, 2024, after being defeated in the NPP parliamentary primary on January 28, 2024.
The incumbent, who was vying for a second term, lost to Frank Aseidu Bekoe, also known as Protozoa, who received 496 votes compared to Asante’s 320. The declaration of vacancies in Parliament, including his seat, was made by Speaker Alban Bagbin under Article 97 of the Constitution, citing reasons of cross-carpeting.
The affected seats include those of Andrew Asiamah Amoako, MP for Fomena and Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Agona West MP Cynthia Morrison, and Peter Kwakye-Ackah, MP for Amenfi Central from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
