Declaration of 4 vacant seats as the commencement of a process to reset Ghana – NDC

The newly appointed Majority Leader, Ato Cassiel Hayford, commended Speaker Alban Bagbin for the formal announcement of four parliamentary seats becoming vacant.

During his address on the Parliament floor, he expressed, “You have taken the appropriate course of action. It is in the best interest of the nation. Allow me to extend my congratulations to the NDC. This marks the initiation of the initiative to rejuvenate Ghana.

As of the next meeting, we will assume control. The recent departure of the minority members does not impede our progress. We express our gratitude to you, Mr. Speaker.

The Members of Parliament impacted by this ruling include Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah, who represents the NDC in Amenfi Central; Andrew Amoakoh Asiamah, an Independent MP for Fomena; Kojo Asante, the NPP MP for Suhum; and Cynthia Morrison, the NPP MP for Agona West.

During his ruling, the Speaker emphasized that Article 97(1)(g) of the 1992 Constitution applies not only to future parliaments but also to the current one, ensuring continuity and accountability.

This decision was informed by a prior incident involving the former Speaker, Prof. The Speaker of Parliament, Mike Oquaye, ejected the Fomena MP from the House following the NPP’s notification of his intention to run as an independent candidate. This action was not mandatory for him or any future Speakers.
