Napo Criticizes NDC For Establishing Vigilante Group During Peace Campaign
The Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is facing criticism from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Vice Presidential Candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, for starting an unlawful vigilante group on the day of the National Peace Campaign. This action, as stated by Dr. Prempeh’s actions are disrespectful to Ghanaians, especially in light of efforts to stop political vigilantism.
A History of Vigilantism
The NDC’s formation of the “Ashanti Region Azorka Boys” vigilante group is worrisome, given the recent anti-vigilante law that was passed to forbid such groups. This law was created to prevent the violence seen in past Ghanaian elections.
NDC’s Track Record
During a campaign rally, Napo highlighted previous instances of NDC involvement in violence, including a statement from presidential candidate John Mahama bragging about the party’s violent capabilities due to its “revolutionary root.” The launch of the vigilante group has raised concerns about potential unrest in the 2024 elections.
Call for Peace
Dr. Prempeh prompted Ghanaians to vote intelligently for a party that prioritizes peace, highlighting that the NPP will refrain from violence and concentrate on initiatives.
The National Peace Council has similarly urged political parties to follow the roadmap for eliminating vigilantism.
NPP’s Dedication to Peace
The NPP’s dedication to peace was clear during Dr. Prempeh’s tour of the Bono Region was joined by influential party members such as Deputy Attorney-General Alfred Tua Yeboah and Bono Regional Minister Justina Owusu Banahene.
