Dumsor is back, gov’t not being honest – Mahama

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential Candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has stated that the government is hiding the true extent of Ghana’s power shortage.

He claims that the government is planning to transfer a $2 billion debt to a future NDC administration if the party is successful in the December 7 election. Mr. Mahama made these accusations while addressing supporters in Ehiamankyene, Krachi West District.

Mahama criticized the government for not implementing a load-shedding schedule, suggesting that this is a way to deceive the public about the seriousness of the situation. He connected the recent power outages to Sunon Asogli’s departure from the industry, stating that this is due to outstanding debts owed by the government.

“Our power plant is not functioning properly because Sunon Asogli has closed its plant due to significant debts owed by the government. As a result, power outages have resurfaced, and this is because the government is not being honest with the people.”

Mahama contended that the current government is hesitant to take responsibility for the power crisis, unlike his previous administration’s transparent approach. He stated, “The current government is unwilling to announce a load-shedding timetable due to concerns of being held accountable for a resurgence of dumsor.”

Mahama claimed that the government plans to pass on a $2 billion energy sector debt to the next administration, especially if it is the NDC. “They want to impose this burden on us,” he emphasized, warning that it would hinder efforts to stabilize the sector.

Mr. Mahama is expecting a significant support for the NDC. Mahama shared his plan for the election, stating that the party aims to secure the Greater Accra Region by a lead of 300,000 votes.

“Our goal is to boost our votes in the Volta and Oti regions, which will in turn increase our support in Greater Accra,” he explained.

“It is essential to expand our lead in the Volta region,” emphasized the NDC Presidential candidate.
Mr. Mahama stressed the need to reduce the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) votes in the Volta region.
