Ghana’s constitution requires a review – Mahama
The leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has characterized the recent removal of four Members of Parliament by Speaker Alban Bagbin as indicative of an escalating crisis in Ghana’s political environment.
Mahama raised alarm about the condition of Ghana’s democracy, specifically citing the Supreme Court’s intervention in Speaker Bagbin’s decision, resulting in the indefinite suspension of Parliament on Tuesday, October 22.
Speaking at the 80th anniversary celebration of the St. Joseph the Worker Anglican Church in Accra on Sunday, October 27. Mahama commended Bagbin for his adept management of the tense situation in Parliament.
He stressed the need to review Ghana’s constitution to avoid similar conflicts, promoting a stronger governance framework to tackle the nation’s changing issues. “Recent events in parliament highlighted the necessity for this.” We came close to facing a constitutional crisis.
If not for the Speaker’s mature handling in adjourning the House, a conflict between the judiciary and Parliament could have ensued. Our government is currently facing a crisis. It is imperative that we initiate a reset and restart. A thorough review of the constitution is necessary to address any loopholes and enhance clarity. This will help prevent similar issues from arising in the future. Our attitudes are facing a crisis.
