How the NPP granted a $5 million housing contract just 12 days after election
A document obtained by GhanaWeb disclosed that the recent Akufo-Addo administration of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) granted a nearly $5 million contract to a firm called Joberg Ghana Limited following their loss in the 2024 elections.
What is both astonishing and alarming is that this contract, which involves building 18 two-bedroom and three-bedroom units in Cantonments for the Ministry of Works and Housing, was sanctioned just 12 days post the 2024 election, even though the government was aware it would soon be leaving office.
In a letter dated December 19, 2024, and signed by Rev. Stephen Yaw Osei, Chief Director of the Ministry of Works and Housing, addressed to the CEO of Joberg Ghana Limited, it was stated:
“We are writing to notify you that your company has been awarded the contract for the aforementioned works for a total of USD 4,944,131.07, to be executed and completed within a period of eighteen (18) calendar months.
“You are requested to get in touch with the undersigned promptly to finalize the Contract Agreement and to take possession of the site allocated for the replacement units. Before signing the agreement, please provide us with a letter of acceptance and a Performance Issuance Bond equating to 40% of the project’s cost.”
Following the elections, the Transition Team of President-elect John Dramani Mahama raised significant alarms regarding purported irregularities occurring in certain governmental agencies during the transition phase.
The team articulated that the outgoing government intended to allocate a total of GH₵240 million to a company for work related to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
Moreover, it was claimed that efforts were underway to place supporters of the Nana Akufo-Addo-led government into positions within organizations such as the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Bank of Ghana.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Spokesperson for the Transition Team, mentioned that the new National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration would hold the outgoing government responsible if any actions were taken without following the proper protocols.
“We wish to warn those involved, particularly individuals breaching their organizations’ rules and Ghanaian laws, that they will be accountable once the new administration assumes power if found to have acted inappropriately or illegally,” he cautioned.
