Afenyo-Markin, intends to push for the recall of Parliament

The Leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Caucus in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, announced his intention to advocate for the resumption of Parliament on Wednesday, October 23, 2024.

In an interview with Citi FM on Tuesday, October 22, the Member of Parliament for Effutu voiced concerns about the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, suspending the House indefinitely. Afenyo-Markin believes that the Speaker’s decision is a strategic move by National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs to obstruct legislative proceedings.

He further alleged that MPs were attempting to undermine Ghana’s economy. Afenyo-Markin emphasized that despite the opposition’s alleged tactics, the NPP is dedicated to thwarting these efforts and ensuring government operations proceed smoothly.

“God willing, the Majority will initiate the recall of Parliament on Wednesday, October 23, due to the Speaker’s actions hindering Parliamentary work and potentially harming the economy. We will see how he responds,” he stated as reported by citinewsroom.com.

Speaker Bagbin had announced the indefinite adjournment of parliamentary activities on October 22 following a dispute over seating arrangements. Afenyo-Markin disputed the Speaker’s claim of consulting with leadership before deciding to adjourn, highlighting the importance of adhering to the Supreme Court’s ruling. When the minority speaks, he is often met with surprise and appears to exhibit signs of fear towards someone.
