UN envoy encourages opposition to openly communicate with the Election Commission and Judiciary
The UN Special Representative, Leonardo Santos Simão, discussed Ghana’s political situation and urged the opposition to work constructively with the Electoral Commission and judiciary.
In an interview on Joy News’ PM Express with Evans Mensah, he acknowledged the opposition’s concerns about voter registration and transparency. However, he mentioned that the Electoral Commission was open to addressing these issues by holding meetings with political parties.
Leonardo Santos Simão, the UN Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel, emphasized the importance of the Electoral Commission’s willingness to collaborate with all stakeholders to build trust. He also expressed confidence in the judiciary’s adherence to the law but noted that the interpretation of the law can be complex at times. He suggested that clearer communication from the judiciary could help the public understand such interpretations.
Mr. Simão highlighted the significance of dialogue and continuous interaction between the opposition and the Electoral Commission in ensuring a transparent and credible electoral process. He stressed that ongoing communication is crucial for building trust and credibility, expressing hope that both parties would engage openly.
