The Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has declared that the government intends to eliminate the betting tax to allow individuals to keep their entire winnings.
This action is in line with President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to abolishing the betting tax and other ‘unwanted’ taxes as part of the campaign for the 2024 elections.
Dr. Forson’s statement made during the budget presentation for 2025 in parliament suggests that the 10% VAT on betting winnings will cease to exist following parliamentary consent, as it has been a major issue for many individuals.
“We will eliminate the 10% withholding tax on betting,” Dr. Ato Forson noted while delivering the budget address in Parliament on March 11, 2025.
The previous government under Akufo-Addo introduced the 10% withholding tax on betting with the aim of reducing gambling activities and increasing national revenue.
This initiative has faced significant backlash from Ghanaian bettors, who feel that the government has not been considerate of their situation.
