We will not participate in any drama in Parliament on Thursday – Habib Iddrisu

First Deputy Majority Whip in Parliament, Habib Iddrisu, has reassured Ghanaians that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs will maintain a disciplined stance when Parliament reconvenes on Thursday, November 7, despite ongoing disputes over which party holds the majority status in the House.

Iddrisu’s comments come in response to a statement made by Minority Chief Whip and Adaklu MP, Governs Kwame Agbodza, who asserted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus would now assume the majority position. Agbodza’s claim is based on Speaker Alban Bagbin’s recent announcement of four parliamentary seats as vacant, which he believes provides the NDC caucus with the necessary numbers to claim majority status.

Agbodza mentioned his intention to attend Thursday’s session as the Majority Chief Whip. In an interview on Eyewitness News on Wednesday, November 6, Iddrisu opposed Agbodza’s statement, stating that Speaker Bagbin has not yet officially granted the NDC majority control in Parliament.

Iddrisu emphasized that if the Speaker does not clarify that the NDC does not hold the majority seats, the NPP caucus will have to reconsider its approach to ensure proper parliamentary procedures are followed. Iddrisu added that they will not participate in any unnecessary commotion.

I can guarantee you and also Ghanaians that we in the NPP are citizens who follow the law. We belong to the Democratic party and we will not participate in any revolutionary protests or violence.

“If the Speaker cannot definitively deny tomorrow that he declared the NDC as the majority party, and therefore cannot sit in the majority seat, and if he plans to cause disruption, we will not support him.” “We will adjust our approach accordingly,” he said.

The statement underscores the growing tensions as both sides get ready for Thursday’s meeting, with the majority status still uncertain.
