The privatization of ECG will be evaluated to enhance electricity distribution – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has suggested the potential privatization of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in an attempt to tackle the inefficiencies present in the nation’s power distribution network.

He holds the view that involving private businesses in the management of ECG might aid in overcoming persistent issues such as operational shortcomings, financial mismanagement, and poor service delivery.

While meeting with a group from the World Bank on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at his office in Accra, Mahama pointed out that privatizing ECG could be part of a larger plan to improve and upgrade the energy sector’s efficiency.

In reflecting on Ghana’s involvement in the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact during his time as Vice President, Mahama stressed the necessity of effective energy distribution to reach the country’s development objectives. He made it clear that any privatization efforts would prioritize the creation of a sustainable energy sector that meets the increasing needs of Ghana’s economy.

Mahama reaffirmed to stakeholders that any decisions about the future of ECG would be made after extensive consultations to align public interests with the desire for enhanced performance.

“If we fail to address the issues at the Electricity Company of Ghana, our entire power value chain will suffer significantly. Therefore, we are looking into the possibility of privatizing the last segment of electricity distribution and introducing private sector efficiency once more. We wish to engage with the World Bank to obtain the necessary expertise to move forward.”
