The Energy Ministry has instructed Parliament to halt the consideration of the ECG-NEDCo merger bill

The Ministry of Energy has formally requested Parliament to halt discussions on the controversial Ghana Energy Regulatory Authority Bill.

This proposed legislation aims to combine the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) with the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) and establish an independent Thermal Power Authority utilizing the thermal plants of the Volta River Authority (VRA).

A statement signed by Herbert Krapah, Minister of State at the Energy Ministry, emphasized the need for further consultations before proceeding with the bill.

The Energy Bill includes multiple legislative proposals such as the Ghana Thermal Authority Bill, Ghana Hydro Authority Bill, Ghana Power Distribution Authority Bill, and Ghana Energy Regulatory Authority Bill, all dated 2024.

Opposition to the bill has arisen from various stakeholders, including senior VRA staff who fear that the proposed merger could compromise operational efficiency and stability.

Demonstrations by VRA senior staff have underscored concerns that the merger outlined in the bill, if approved, might hinder the authority’s capacity to manage resources effectively and provide reliable energy services.
