Rev. Kusi Boateng addresses claims regarding being taken into custody by the NIB

The Secretary for the Board of Trustees of Ghana’s National Cathedral, Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng, has refuted claims about his being detained by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

While addressing his church members in a video released by Asaase Radio on X on Saturday, March 15, 2025, Rev. Kusi Boateng asserted that he had not been apprehended.

“People are saying that I attempted to flee, but who exactly am I fleeing from? I’m a citizen who follows the law, and I have not wronged anyone, so why would I run away?

“Now, there are claims that I’ve been arrested. How could someone who is supposedly arrested be standing right here? Perhaps they’ve captured my spirit,” he humorously commented in Twi.

He expressed alarm about the rising tide of falsehoods, noting that deceit has become commonplace, even among religious leaders.

“What is happening to the world? It is now filled with deceivers. Pastors are being dishonest, and their followers are following suit… What sort of world is this?” he remarked.

Rev. Kusi Boateng explained that he had only interacted with security personnel concerning the National Cathedral initiative after returning to Ghana, emphasizing that he was not detained while trying to leave the country.

“I returned to the country just yesterday. Upon my arrival, I learned that some individuals were accusing me of misappropriating funds from the National Cathedral project and claimed that I was being pursued.

“I was only there briefly to discuss the issue, yet people are asserting that I was captured while trying to flee Ghana. What has this generation come to?”

Background:

Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng was reported to have been taken into custody by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) over allegations involving a dual identity scandal.

A report from Citi Newsroom indicated that the troubled pastor was aiding in investigations.

In a 2023 investigation, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the MP for North Tongu and current Foreign Affairs Minister, accused Rev. Kusi Boateng of holding multiple passports under different names.

“Based on solid and undeniable documents in my possession, Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng, also known as Kwabena Adu Gyamfi, utilizes various passports and identification cards with alternate names and differing birth dates as part of his usual practice,” Ablakwa stated in a post on Facebook.

He also alleged that JNS Talent Centre Ltd, a business owned by Rev. Kusi Boateng, received GH¢2.6 million for the National Cathedral’s construction using the alias Kwabena Adu Gyamfi.

Ablakwa asserted that materials he has confirm that Kwabena Adu Gyamfi is the same individual as Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng.

Despite these accusations, Boateng remains an Executive Council Member and Director on the National Cathedral Board.

On Thursday, July 13, 2024, the Human Rights Court rejected an application from Rev. Kusi Boateng that sought to prevent MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa from mentioning him in relation to the National Cathedral.

While the precise charges against him are not clearly defined, sources suggest that he is under scrutiny for his alleged dual identity.
