President Mahama revokes MMDCE appointments

President John Dramani Mahama has canceled the appointments of all Municipal, Metropolitan, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).

This cancellation was detailed in a communication sent to the chief director of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development.

Additionally, the roles of all assembly members in political positions across the different districts have also been annulled.

Meanwhile, district coordinating directors have been instructed to serve as acting officials at the various assemblies nationwide.

“In line with the authority granted to H.E. John Mahama through the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) as modified by the Local Governance (Amendment) Act, 2017, (Act 940), the following appointments are hereby revoked, effective today: 1. Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies. 2. Assembly Members appointed in accordance with the pertinent sections of the Act.

“In the meantime, the respective Coordinating Directors of the different MMDAs are instructed to take on the role of acting Chief Executives until permanent appointments are properly established. Please acknowledge this and act accordingly,” the letter, which was issued by the Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama, on January 8, 2025, stated.
