NPP’s Cynthia Morrison has been restrained from running as an independent candidate for parliament
Cynthia Mamle Morrison, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West in the Central Region, has been barred from participating as an independent candidate in the 2024 parliamentary election.
This ruling comes shortly before the December 7, 2024, polls, following Morrison’s unsuccessful bid in the NPP parliamentary primaries for the Agona West Constituency.
The District Magistrate Court in Agona Swedru issued the injunction on Friday, October 11, 2024, in response to a challenge to Morrison’s candidacy filed by three residents of Agona Swedru. The court has instructed the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC), the second party in the case, to halt the processing of the MP’s nomination for the upcoming election. The court document obtained by GhanaWeb stated, “WHEREAS appearing on the 11th day of September 2024 before HIS WORSHIP, VICTOR KUSI ESQUIRE, DISTRICT MAGISTRATE, Agona Swedru.” “AND AFTER listening to AUSTIN KWARENA BRAND-POWERS, the plaintiff’s Counsel, the Motion is Approved.”
The document also declared, “IT IS HEREBY ORDERED that the Motion for an interlocutory injunction preventing the 1st Defendant from claiming to be a parliamentary candidate and the 2nd Defendant from progressing with the nomination of Cynthia Mamle Morrison as an Independent Parliamentary nominee until the case is fully resolved.”
The Defendants are instructed to cease all activities related to the nomination process for the Member of Parliament for Agona West Constituency, specifically regarding Cynthia Mamle Morrison, until the resolution of this case. The court has scheduled the next hearing for October 15, 2024. Cynthia Morrison, who previously held the position as NPP MP for Agona West, lost in the NPP primaries for the upcoming election to Christopher Arthur. She has expressed her intention to run independently, citing dissatisfaction with the current NPP leadership.
