The representative for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has linked the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the upcoming 2024 elections to its inability to clearly convey the difficulties faced during its period in office to the citizens of Ghana.
In an interview on Point Blank, a part of Eyewitness News, Mr. Assafuah acknowledged that the challenges in governance had a considerable effect on the party’s appeal.
He commended President Akufo-Addo as one of the most exceptional leaders since Ghana gained independence, but he admitted that certain choices made by the President and his appointed officials did not sit well with the public.
“We encountered governance issues. Akufo-Addo is among the most effective presidents we have ever had since our independence. Yet, there are specific actions and omissions by his appointees that the Ghanaian people did not appreciate.
“There may also be a couple of the president’s decisions that, perhaps due to misinterpretation, weren’t accepted well. I firmly believe that the NPP and its administration did not succeed in communicating the difficulties faced by the people of Ghana,” he remarked.
Further elaborating, Mr. Assafuah mentioned campaign commitments made by President John Mahama, which included promises to abolish certain taxes such as the E-Levy and Betting Tax within the first 120 days of taking office.
He contended that such commitments illustrate the intricacies of governance and the challenges involved in realizing them without causing fiscal disruptions.
“John Mahama indicated that he would eliminate the E-Levy and Betting Tax, among others, within the first 120 days of taking office. This was stated before he assumed power. He is now attempting to convince the Ghanaian populace, but fulfilling such promises might be quite challenging.
“This indicates that these taxes are essential. However, the NPP did not manage to engage the people of Ghana sufficiently to help them grasp the challenges we encountered as a nation,” he clarified.
