NDC MPs will return to Parliament if Speaker issues recall – Ayariga
Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga, has affirmed that Members of Parliament from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are fully prepared and dedicated to promptly respond should Speaker Alban Bagbin call for a recall of parliamentary proceedings.
The assurance comes in the aftermath of Parliament’s indefinite adjournment on Tuesday, October 22, following a contentious session characterized by disagreements between the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regarding the majority caucus.
During an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Ayariga underscored that NDC MPs are ready to heed the Speaker’s summons, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to carrying out their legislative duties despite the prevailing tensions. He emphasized that their readiness to reconvene in the Chamber exemplifies the party’s allegiance to the country’s governance process.
The adjournment of Parliament ensued from sharp rifts between the two political parties concerning the majority position in the House. Ayariga noted that NPP MPs were notably underrepresented, with fewer than 30 members in attendance during the session.
He condemned the NPP for their perceived lack of readiness and seriousness in carrying out parliamentary duties.
Ayariga also criticized NPP MPs for their role in the disruptions, alleging that their actions were part of a larger strategy led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin to maintain his former Majority Leader position. Despite the political deadlock, Ayariga stated that NDC MPs are prepared to serve and are awaiting the Speaker’s instructions for the next parliamentary steps.
“Many NPP MPs are currently campaigning in their constituencies, so we will respond whenever the Speaker summons us. We will abide by the Speaker’s decision if he declares us the Minority, but he has not done so yet,” Ayariga informed Umaru Sanda Amadu.
