Madina Independent Candidate Arrested for Impersonation

The NDC Madina constituency is currently experiencing heightened tensions following the arrest and detention of Awal Mohammed, an independent parliamentary candidate, on allegations of dishonesty and deception.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) formally reported Mohammed to the Madina Police for allegedly using former President John Dramani Mahama’s image alongside his own on campaign posters, which they believe misled voters into thinking he was affiliated with the NDC.

This situation has caused outrage, with many perceiving it as an attempt to manipulate the party’s supporters. Concerns escalated to the brink of violent confrontations, prompting the NDC to demand action, resulting in Mohammed’s arrest and subsequent appearance in court.

At the Adenta Circuit Court, the NDC’s Madina Constituency Chairman, Secretary, and legal representatives presented the case against Mohammed, who has not yet responded to the accusations.

The court has adjourned the hearing until Friday, October 18, 2024, to consider Mohammed’s bail application. Incumbent MP and lawyer, Francis Xavier Sosu, is facing scrutiny for his involvement in the matter, with critics suggesting that his legal influence played a role in the swift actions taken against Mohammed.

This has caused alarm among Mohammed’s supporters, who view the arrest as an effort to silence a rival candidate ahead of the parliamentary elections.

The Madina constituency is a crucial battleground in the upcoming 2024 elections, with both NDC and NPP candidates vigorously competing for control. Background of the Controversy: Francis Xavier Sosu, the current MP, serves on the Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Committee and the Appointments Committee.

Questions have been raised about potential conflicts of interest due to his participation in the case. The NDC contends that their actions are aimed at safeguarding the party’s reputation from misrepresentation. Conversely, Mohammed’s supporters argue that the NDC and Sosu are undermining his campaign through legal tactics.
