Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu refers to Ato Forson’s decision to abolish E-Levy and other policies as ‘infantile’
The previous Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu criticized the Minority’s move to eliminate the E-Levy, Betting Tax, and other policies while aligning with the majority in the House.
He stated that gaining presidential approval may be necessary for such actions. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) plans to use its recently declared “majority status” in Parliament to reduce the tax burden on the Ghanaian population.
Ato Forson announced the elimination of contentious taxes such as the Electronic Transfers Levy (E-Levy) and betting taxes. He made this statement during a press conference on Sunday, held in response to Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant.
Dr. Forson, who leads the NDC caucus, emphasized the intention to abolish these taxes. Cassiel Ato Forson reaffirmed the party’s dedication to reducing what he characterized as “nuisance taxes.” Dr. Ato Forson emphasized that the NDC’s control of the majority would be utilized to alleviate the economic challenges stemming from the NPP government’s policies.
He pledged that the NDC’s primary objective would be eliminating taxes that have led to widespread discontent amongst the populace. “We will leverage our new majority to propose private members’ bills aimed at eliminating the E-Levy, ultimately alleviating the burden on the Ghanaian people.
However, during an appearance on Okay FM’s ‘Ade Akye Abia’ show, the Suame lawmaker clarified that the Minority is aware that obtaining presidential approval will be necessary in order to successfully repeal these taxes, even if they manage to gain majority support.
Such arguments, in all honesty, are immature and should not be entertained.” All responses must be in English language: Will the bill be sent to former President Mahama for signature?” he inquired.
