I have finished gathering the results from Ablekuma North – Returning Officer resigns

The Returning Officer for the Ablekuma North Constituency, Vincent Obeng, has made the announcement to halt the collection of results in that area.

He notified the Electoral Commission (EC) to arrange for a replacement, expressing his frustrations faced during the results collection process on January 8, 2025.

Obeng disclosed that, of the seven polling locations, results for four had been aggregated, leaving three still pending.

In a conversation with Channel One News’ Hanson Agyemang, Obeng shared, “I trust you have witnessed the situation. On January 7, we had seven polling stations remaining. Today [January 8], we managed to complete four out of the total.

“With three left, we had our presiding officers present, but only two attended, and they were unable to verify the poll statement and the declaration document. One officer couldn’t make it, so that accounts for the three remaining.

“It is truly unfortunate for me to say that I am finished with Ablekuma North. They must find a new Returning Officer to carry on with their responsibilities.”

The Director of Training at the EC, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, expressed disappointment regarding the remarks made by the Returning Officer.

Disorder broke out at the Greater Accra Regional Office when the Electoral Commission (EC) resumed the results collection for Ablekuma North, resulting in increased tensions.

The turmoil arose from claims made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) alleging that the EC was colluding with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to skew the election results in the constituency.

Musa Kalamu, the NDC’s Constituency Organiser, claimed that the EC was assisting the NPP in manipulating the data from the remaining polling stations’ pink sheets.

This incident followed the EC’s resumption of result collection after temporarily pausing the process for Ablekuma North due to outstanding result discrepancies from seven polling stations on January 6.

This move was taken as the EC aimed to validate and confirm the results from these polling stations prior to advancing with the final collection.

From the 20 unverified polling stations at the commencement of the collection process on Monday, January 6, presiding officers have successfully authenticated 13 of the pink sheets provided by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
