GWL MD examines facilities for water purification to tackle deficiencies in production

Mr. Adam Mutawakilu, who is currently the Acting Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), has started a comprehensive evaluation tour of significant water treatment facilities in Accra to assess operational shortcomings and pinpoint immediate remedies for enhancing output.

This visit is a result of the management’s proactive acknowledgment of pressing issues impacting water distribution and the urgent need for measures to close the gap between demand and supply while ensuring effective service provision.

The tour encompassed visits to the Weija Water Treatment Plant, the Kpong Water Treatment Plant, and the Accra Desalination Plant, with the goal of obtaining direct knowledge of the obstacles preventing optimal water production.

During the visits, Mr. Mutawakilu interacted with engineers and plant operators to evaluate the state of the infrastructure, identify technical challenges, and highlight areas that need prompt attention.

With Accra’s daily water requirement estimated at 220 million gallons while its production capacity stands at only 130 million gallons, the city is experiencing a significant deficit of 90 million gallons.

Recognizing this discrepancy, the MD reassured stakeholders of GWL’s dedication to improving operational effectiveness, achieving maximum production capacity, and incorporating advanced technology to enhance supply.

Mr. Mutawakilu emphasized the importance of quick measures to tackle equipment maintenance concerns, modernize aging infrastructure, and resolve operational issues that obstruct optimal production. He highlighted the necessity for immediate upgrades to ensure improved water availability for the residents of the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area.

Accompanied by his team of Chief Managers and the Acting Deputy Managing Director responsible for operations, the MD reaffirmed that GWL’s commitment to implementing both immediate and long-term strategies to guarantee that residents have access to a dependable and sustainable water supply remains a top priority.

Alongside the treatment facilities, the GWL MD also inspected critical sites such as the Mile 18 Central Workshop, where crucial repairs and the fabrication of large pipes, pumps, and drainage systems take place, as well as the Central store, where essential chemicals and materials are stored.

This facility is essential for sustaining water infrastructure, and initiatives are being pursued to provide the required resources to ensure the prompt repair of aging pumps and components crucial for enhancing Accra’s water supply.

Commitment to Improving Water Supply

After the site visit, Mr. Mutawakilu reiterated the goals of John Dramani Mahamah’s administration for the Water Sector and emphasized GWL’s dedication to remedying production deficits through enhanced efficiency at the treatment facilities and central workshop.

He expressed that the company plans to undertake specific actions to fill the water supply void and guarantee that residents of Accra receive a more stable and dependable water service.

As a component of its future-oriented plan, the MD mentioned that the company is contemplating the integration of modern water treatment methods to boost efficiency and minimize water wastage.

Moreover, he pointed out that initiatives are in progress to restore outdated infrastructure and increase the capacity of current treatment plants to align with the rising population and industrial growth.

Mr. Mutawakilu emphasized that although immediate strategies will assist in easing current supply issues, it is crucial to make long-term investments in infrastructure and policy changes to secure water availability for Accra and its nearby regions.
