Galamsey: Atik Criticizes Akufo-Addo for Prioritizing Political Gains
Atik Mohammed criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over the issue of galamsey, which poses a significant threat to the economy.
Illegal mining activities have led to the destruction of water bodies and the environment, prompting warnings from the Ghana Water Company and Ghana Health Service.
Organized Labour initially threatened a strike to pressure the President into taking action against the illegal miners, but later called off the strike following assurances from the President that measures were being taken.
The deployment of over 100 soldiers to galamsey sites, along with the President’s directive to suspend mining in forest reserves, are part of efforts to combat this issue.
Atik Mohammed, a former PNC General Secretary, criticized the President for what he perceived as a lack of decisive action in addressing the problem, suggesting that political considerations may be hindering effective decision-making.
“So, in order to avoid the loss of seats, it is suggested that Ghana be eradicated,” stated during an interview on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ program. He further inquired, “What motivates individuals to enter politics?” and explained, “The primary objective is to serve the public.”
Your personal interests and those of your party are now prioritized over the collective interest, which is not the purpose of engaging in politics. Atik advocated for a halt to small-scale and artisanal mining activities as the only solution to the issue. He expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s lack of determination in addressing the problem.
