Five main inaugural speech from John Mahama
The second term for John Dramani Mahama has officially begun, following his inauguration at the Black Star Square in Accra on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.
The ceremony attracted more than 21 national leaders, during which the new president gave his inaugural address, effectively addressing significant elements of Ghana’s economy.
Starting with reflections on his rapport with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the speech moved on to discuss the significance of Ghana’s democratic principles and ultimately outlined his vision for revitalizing the nation’s economy.
1.Historically friendly relationship with Akufo-Addo
In the initial moments of his address, John Mahama praised the previous president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Recalling their political journeys, Mahama pointed out that both he and Nana Akufo-Addo initiated their political careers in 1996.
“Nana Addo has consistently shown me kindness. This is especially true considering that eight years ago, on January 7, 2017, we were here together for the same transition. At that point, I was the outgoing president after serving a term, and he was stepping in as the newly elected president, entrusted by the citizens of Ghana to guide our great nation. On that day, as I’m sure we share today, we both recognized our duty to serve the people of Ghana,” he stated.
2.Administration will focus on accountability and creativity
President John Dramani Mahama emphasized that his leadership will be based on accountability and creativity, with his administration committed to innovatively addressing the country’s unemployment challenges.
“My team and I, alongside my Vice President, will focus on inclusiveness, transparency, and creativity, paving the way for the advancement of all citizens. I am immensely appreciative of this occasion, marking a pivotal point in the quest for a brighter future for Ghana.
“In this overwhelming victory, I perceive a clear message from the youth of Ghana, and this instance reaffirms that your voices hold weight and that prioritizing your future is essential. Our strategies will be designed to support innovation and cultivate an industry that involves today’s younger generation. We aim to establish quality, well-paying employment opportunities in partnership with the private sector and business leaders,” he continued.
3.Calls for private sector collaboration on 24-Hour Economy initiative
John Mahama reiterated the significance of the 24-Hour Economy as a foundational element for revitalizing the nation’s economy.
He assured the public of his government’s dedication to fostering an environment conducive to the policy’s success.
“The first priority is the restoration and stabilization of our macroeconomic framework. The second is enhancing the business climate and investment landscape to ensure Ghana is ready for business once more,” he expressed.
As a prominent part of his campaign promises, the president conveyed his belief that this agenda would fundamentally transform Ghana’s economy.
4.Emphasize public health
President Mahama expressed his commitment to enhancing the public health infrastructure to make it sufficiently resilient against pandemics such as COVID-19.
“As the climate crisis intensifies, there is a possibility that viruses believed to be eradicated for years may resurface and lead to another outbreak. This poses a significant threat; we must remember the devastating effects previous viral outbreaks have had on families and communities in our neighboring nations. My administration will diligently work to fortify our public health systems and keep an eye on global health developments, ensuring that the impact of any future pandemic or outbreak is minimized.”
5.Renewal initiative in progress
John Mahama declared that his taking office signified the start of steering the country towards opportunities for job creation, discouraging corruption, and ensuring resources are managed effectively.
“We have faced immense economic difficulties, transitioning through crises one after the other in recent times. However, there is light ahead,” he remarked.
Describing the occasion as a pivotal moment, he added, “Today signals the start of a fresh chance—an opportunity to reshape our governance and economic approaches. Together, we will rejuvenate our cherished nation, Ghana.”
