Felicity Nelson Breaks Silence on Brutal Arrest, Police Mistreatment During Protest

On October 11, 2024, Felicity Nelson, a prominent figure in the FixtheCountry Democracy Hub protest, shared her experience of arrest and 17-day remand in an exclusive interview.

Nelson, who was arrested during the protest against government policies, described the chaotic circumstances that unfolded during the demonstration.

She revealed that on the second day of the protest, a tense standoff arose between demonstrators and police when an attempt to tow a police van resulted in an escalating confrontation.

Nelson, feeling a sense of responsibility after seeing a child taken by the police, left her home to join the protest.

Nelson recounted how the police carried out a sweeping arrest, detaining even innocent bystanders, including a man buying coconut and a patrol driver.

Despite having no clear explanation for her arrest, she noted the use of excessive force by officers and their refusal to disclose the reasons behind their actions.

After being detained at various police stations without being formally charged, Nelson was informed that she had been arrested for illegal assembly, though no formal charges were provided.

Her prolonged detention, which exceeded the lawful 48-hour period, was marred by inefficiency in processing her bail. Even after bail was granted, Nelson remained in custody for over a day before being released.

Despite the false charges levied against her, Nelson expressed no remorse, stating that her activism was for a righteous cause and she was willing to endure the consequences for the sake of Ghana’s future.
