Excitement about the new IGP shows Dampare’s legacy against corruption – Prof Aning

Security Analyst Prof. Kwesi Aning has commented on the joyful reactions of police officers after COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno was named the new Inspector General of Police (IGP). He sees this as a sign of the positive leadership of former IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

When COP Yohuno visited the Police Headquarters after being sworn in, officers celebrated enthusiastically, cheering for his leadership and welcoming him warmly.

Some officers even threw money in the air at the newly appointed IGP, showing their happiness and support for his new role.

However, during the celebrations, some officers criticized former IGP Dampare, calling him a “tyrant” and a “dictator,” claiming that his departure had “liberated” the police force.

In an interview with Channel One Newsroom on Friday, Prof. Aning commended Dampare for his dedication to discipline and professionalism, which he believes changed the Ghana Police Service for the better.

“What this indicates is that this person and officer has changed the service and ensured that the corruption and the networks that let individuals take the law into their own hands no longer functioned,” Prof. Aning explained.

He pointed out that Dampare’s leadership broke down long-standing systems of corruption and favoritism within the police.

Prof. Aning also mentioned that advocating for discipline and professionalism often has its drawbacks.

“When you advocate for discipline and professionalism, you may not make friends,” he said, emphasizing the difficulties faced by leaders who choose integrity over being liked.
