Contractor must be held accountable for Buduburam explosion, according to safety expert

Jonathan Antwi, a professional in Occupational Safety and Health, is advocating for the contractor responsible for the Buduburam explosion to be held responsible for the tragic event that resulted in three fatalities and more than 30 injuries.

The incident, which occurred during a controlled rock blast as part of the road expansion project on the Kasoa-Buduburam stretch, took place on Monday, October 14, 2024. Mr. Antwi voiced his concerns on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, October 15, 2024. Antwi raised concerns regarding the contractor’s failure to comply with essential safety procedures, potentially averting the disaster.

He asserted the need for the contractor to be held accountable.

Antwi underscored the significance of following the Mineral Commission’s LI 2177 Section 175, which delineates the obligatory steps before initiating any blasting activity.

His statements mirror the escalating public outrage following the tragic incident, advocating for accountability and rigorous enforcement of safety protocols in construction and blasting undertakings.

“In the event that investigations reveal non-compliance with the prescribed guidelines after the blast, they should be held liable for their actions and inactions,” he declared.
