Call us Minority instead of ‘Micro-Minority’ – Afenyo-Markin to Speaker
The Minority Members of Parliament have voiced strong objections to Speaker Alban Bagbin’s labeling of their group as a “micro-minority.”
Leading the charge, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin articulated the group’s displeasure during a parliamentary meeting, asserting that the term was neither fitting nor necessary.
This exchange took place during the session on Wednesday, January 8, when Speaker Bagbin utilized the controversial phrase, leading to unrest among the caucus members.
In reaction to the Speaker’s terminology, Afenyo-Markin remarked, “Mr Speaker, we do not exist as a micro minority. Mr Speaker, the minority caucus formally objects to the characterization given to us by Mr Speaker.”
He also emphasized the minority caucus’s contribution to Bagbin’s election as Speaker, despite the majority’s resistance.
“Mr Speaker, we supported the motion for your election. While the so-called majority was plotting against you, we stood up against that. We were the ones who thwarted their schemes. Mr Speaker, it was us, the principled minority,” he elaborated.
Afenyo-Markin maintained that the label “micro minority” was inappropriate and asked the Speaker to refer to them as “minority semplicità.”
