Alexander Djiku rejected captains armband twice during Black Stars’ win over Chad

The defender for the Black Stars, Alexander Djiku, declined the captain’s armband on two occasions during Ghana’s impressive victory over Chad on March 21, 2025.

During the second half, after the main captain Jordan Ayew had been substituted, Djiku was presented with the armband but he turned it down.

Ayew then passed the armband to Thomas Partey, who later returned it to Djiku. However, Djiku insisted that Partey keep it. The Arsenal player then had a word with the coaching staff before putting it on.

As the match progressed, Partey was replaced as well. As he left the field, he tried to give the armband to Djiku, but Djiku refused once more, handing it instead to Mohammed Kudus, who wore it until the final whistle.

According to the recent captaincy arrangement, Jordan Ayew serves as the primary captain, while Djiku is designated as the vice-captain.

This situation has sparked worries about Djiku’s acceptance of his role, particularly as Partey—who had previously been the vice-captain under Andre Ayew—also declined the deputy position in the new arrangement.

Regardless of the captaincy dynamics, the team successfully secured a 5-0 victory against Chad, propelling them to the top of the standings. This significant win also marked the end of their six-match streak without a win.
