Akufo-Addo and the judiciary have breached the constitution – Alban Bagbin
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, criticized the Executive and Judicial branches of government for potentially harming Ghana’s democracy.
On November 6, 2024, Bagbin expressed concern about President Akufo-Addo’s decision not to approve the anti-LGBTQ bill passed by Parliament, stating it was a violation of the constitution.
Bagbin pointed out that the President’s rejection of the bill lacked legal justification. He stated, “…this was exhibited by the President’s refusal to even receive the LGBTQ+ bill duly processed and passed by parliament without any legal basis.” The courts’ approval of this action by accepting and handling a lawsuit on this issue is troubling. These are concerning instances in our democratic journey.
“Both the president and the judiciary have violated the constitution and should admit their mistakes and ask for forgiveness,” he emphasized.
Speaker Bagbin also condemned lawmakers for using the Supreme Court to diminish Parliament.
He expressed disappointment over the recent incident where the NPP caucus took legal action at the Supreme Court, questioning their allegiance to Parliament.
“Lawmakers, who should prioritize Parliament over the Supreme Court, resort to the Supreme Court whenever possible to undermine Parliament. “This might be why Parliament and its members lack respect and are looked down upon,” he expressed with regret.
