Akua Donkor seeks GH¢2 trillion in damages over derogatory comment from Mahama

The presidential candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Akua Donkor, has made a threat to sue former president John Dramani Mahama.

Donkor has asserted that the potential lawsuit will seek clarification from Mahama, who also serves as the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), regarding his recent remarks suggesting that some 2024 presidential candidates were improperly qualified by the Electoral Commission for the election.

Additionally, Donkor has accused John Mahama of involvement in the death of former President John Evans Atta Mills, and therefore believes that the court should investigate.

At an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held on October 15, 2024, Donkor announced, “I am informing you today that former President John Mahama, if he claims to hold the position of president, I will take legal action against him.” She added, “I will file a lawsuit seeking two trillion.”

Was he the one who provided financial support for the establishment of my political party? I had no prior acquaintance with him back then. Why did he suggest that I should not have been deemed eligible?

Am I not considered a human being? And am I not a citizen of Ghana? I intend to pursue legal action against him. I will furnish you with a letter addressed to EC and her deputies. I am a human being from Ghana.

“His representative mentioned that some of us who came here should not have been allowed to come.” He will demonstrate this in a court of law. He lacks cleanliness. I am familiar with him; he was involved in the death of Atta Mills, and I intend to bring him to court.”

John Mahama criticized the Electoral Commission for disqualifying the People’s National Convention (PNC) flagbearer from the 2024 race during a speech in Nabullo, Sissala East, Upper West Region, on Sunday, October 13. Mahama argued that some candidates allowed to run are not as qualified as Bernard Mornah, whom he views as a stronger competitor.

“The PNC is a more deserving party than many others on the ballot paper, but this is an issue with the EC. There are instances of discrimination on the ballot paper, as Bernard Mornah is more qualified to be included than certain individuals, said Akua Donkor. Although no names were specifically mentioned, she believed John Mahama was alluding to her among others.
