Agona West: One individual sustains injury following discharge of firearm at campaign event
One individual was wounded by gunfire, and multiple others incurred minor injuries when a firearm was discharged into a crowd at a small gathering in Agona Swedru.
Supporters of Chris Arthur, a candidate, were on their way back to Agona Swedru from a campaign kick-off event in Otinkorang, a locality within the Agona West region.
Upon reaching Agona Nyankrom, they crossed paths with backers of the incumbent MP Cynthia Morrison, who were also engaged in their campaign efforts.
While passing through the crowd, an unexpected gunshot resulted in Haruna Rashid, the campaign team manager for Chris Arthur, sustaining wounds to the ribs. Jibril Tanko, the NPP Agona West constituency chairman, detailed that Cynthia Morrison’s team instigated an attack on the parliamentary candidate’s group without cause as they tried to move through the gathering.
Tanko expressed regret over the assault following a campaign tour with their Parliamentary Candidate in Otinkorang. Our Member of Parliament, Cynthia Morrison, was launching her campaign at Agona Nyankrom. We traversed through the crowd at Nyankrom before reaching our destination. The crowd was tense, and Cynthia Morrison’s supporters began to assault us.
“I warned my Parliamentary Candidate that we would not be able to navigate the crowd safely, but unfortunately, my prediction came true.” A firearm was discharged, resulting in Haruna Rashid, the campaign team manager for Chris Arthur, being struck by a bullet.
He has been promptly transported to Accra for medical treatment. The chairman disclosed that the matter has been reported to law enforcement authorities for proper investigation and apprehension of the perpetrator.
Additionally, he expressed astonishment at the actions of Cynthia Morrison’s campaign team and confirmed that formal complaints have been lodged with the local police. We urge law enforcement to capture the perpetrator.
“We will persist in our endeavors to ensure Chris succeeds in his campaign for parliament. Other supporters who were also injured during the turmoil were transported to Agona Swedru Government Hospital for medical treatment.”
