I am confused and disappointed – Ofori-Atta responds to the OSP inquiry

Former Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta has spoken out regarding the criminal investigation initiated against him by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), sharing his disappointment about the latest occurrences.

In a publicly available letter dated February 26, Mr. Ofori-Atta labeled the circumstances as bewildering and upsetting, emphasizing his intention to clarify the truth.

His response comes after the OSP released a notice declaring him wanted, which was then withdrawn. The focus of the investigation, as stated by the OSP, revolves around various financial matters such as the Strategic Mobilisation-GRA Contract, the termination of the ECG-BXC contract, expenses linked to the National Cathedral, the acquisition of ambulances, and the management of the Tax Refund Account.

With public interest and scrutiny increasing, the OSP later confirmed that Mr. Ofori-Atta had officially indicated his intent to return voluntarily. Consequently, he was taken off the wanted list, although the office warned that if he failed to return as indicated, additional legal actions would follow.

Contemplating the situation, Mr. Ofori-Atta conveyed his confusion regarding the developing events.

“I have been featured prominently in the news lately in quite a striking manner. I deemed it necessary to present to you the facts surrounding the recent events and news reports related to me and Ghana’s Special Prosecutor. I am just as confused and upset, as I believe you might be.

“On January 24, I was out of the country for medical purposes when the Special Prosecutor requested an in-person meeting on February 10, 2025, regarding four cases related to ‘corruption and corruption-related matters.’ I was neither the initiating nor the executing Minister for any of these areas. I promptly replied through my legal representatives, expressing my readiness for them to provide any information needed to assist with the investigation, considering I would be abroad for the following months for medical reasons.

“The Special Prosecutor declined the proposal to converse with my lawyers, insisting on a predetermined date for my personal appearance. Following this, on February 11, armed National Security personnel conducted a raid at my residence. The Special Prosecutor alleged that I orchestrated the raid myself and subsequently launched an international campaign, labeling me a wanted ‘fugitive from justice.’”
