The Asantehene has inaugurated the groundbreaking ceremony for the development of an oncology facility in Kwaso
The groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of an oncology center in Kwaso, Ejisu Municipality, Ashanti Region, Ghana was led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The project, known as the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Comprehensive Cancer Center of Excellence (CCCoE), is located on a 52-acre site in honor of the 16th King of the Asante Kingdom. On Friday, October 11, 2024, the sod-cutting event was attended by Otumfuo Hiahene, Nana Prof Oheneba Boachie-Adjei Woahene II, on behalf of the Asantehene.
This initiative, supported by a $100 million investment from Breast Care International (BCI), Peace and Love Hospitals, and various global partners such as Global Health Catalyst and the University of Pennsylvania, USA, will commence with a $10 million first phase.
This initial phase will encompass Clinical Services (Radiotherapy suite), a Research Wing, an AI Hub, an Education Centre, and Community Outreach. Upon completion, the project aims to provide comprehensive services for cancer care, prevention, awareness, diagnostics, screening, treatment, research, training, education, telemedicine, an AI Hub, palliative care, and rehabilitation for various types of cancers.
Beatrice Wiafe Addai, President of Breast Care International (BCI), affirmed that the oncology center will have a positive impact on Ghana, West Africa, and will enhance cancer treatment throughout the continent. The facility is focused on delivering advanced cancer care services that are customized to meet the unique needs of each patient, utilizing cutting-edge technologies.
Prof Will Ngwa, the creator of Global Health Catalyst, has contributed $1 million towards the initiative and has called for Ghanaians to show their support for the cancer center. Otumfuo Hiahene Nana Prof Oheneba Boachie-Adjei Woahene II commended Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai and Prof Will Ngwa have played a key role in enhancing cancer care in Ghana.
The construction of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Comprehensive Cancer Center of Excellence (CCCoE) will create job opportunities for more than 250 employees and offer a range of specialized rooms and amenities. The facility will house a Multidisciplinary Team, Chemotherapy suite, Brachytherapy suite, CT scan simulators, admission wards, laboratories, X-ray machines, surgical theatres, and other essential features.
