Ashanti Region appoints new Chief Imam
Sheikh Abdul Rahman Zakaria has been officially appointed as the Ashanti Regional Chief Imam during a ceremony led by National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, held in Kumasi.
This event comes after the passing of the previous Regional Chief Imam, Sheik Abdul Mumin Haroun, on December 17 of last year, who had served the Muslim community in the region for 13 years.
The ceremony was attended by notable figures from various sectors, such as politicians, religious officials, and traditional leaders, and it also served to honor the final funeral rites of the esteemed Islamic scholar.
This significant event marked a transition in Muslim leadership within the Asante Kingdom.
Sheikh Abdul Mumin Haroun passed away at 74 following a short illness at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.
The Muslim community in the Ashanti Region holds great hopes for the newly appointed Chief Imam.
In addition to his primary responsibilities of leading prayers and offering spiritual counsel, he is anticipated to be instrumental in fostering unity among the varied Muslim groups in the area.
This unity is intended to reach beyond common faith, aiming to bridge tribal, sectarian, and political divides to cultivate a harmonious community.
There is also an expectation for the new Chief Imam to embody integrity, neutrality, and fairness in his role, thereby establishing a standard for others to follow.
Sheikh Abass Karaara was introduced as the Deputy Regional Chief Imam to support the Chief Imam in carrying out his responsibilities.
A certificate of recognition from the National Chief Imam was given to the new Chief Imam, marking the official validation of his role.
The occasion was attended by distinguished figures, including President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and other government representatives, highlighting the importance of the event.
As the Ashanti Region welcomes its new Chief Imam, the community looks forward to his positive impact and guidance in the forthcoming days.
