Police interrogate EC Officer regarding the improper conveyance of electoral supplies

The Electoral Commission (EC) has provided clarification regarding an event involving the District Electoral Officer (DEO) for Afadjato South in the Volta Region, who was interrogated by the Police on Thursday, December 5, concerning the transportation of election materials in a personal vehicle without the necessary Police escort.

In a statement released, the EC affirmed that the Police had seized the materials and underscored that the Commission’s regulations require all election materials to be moved using official vehicles, and if appropriate, accompanied by a Police escort.

The statement, which was signed by Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman responsible for Operations, highlighted that the EC will carry out internal inquiries into the infraction while providing full cooperation with the Police as they continue their investigations.

The Commission provided assurances to the public that, despite the officer’s violation of procedure, the legitimacy of the elections in the Afadjato South Constituency remains intact.

RE: POLICE INTERROGATES EC OFFICIAL OF AFADJATO SOUTH DISTRICT ABOUT ELECTION MATERIALS IN PERSONAL VEHICLE

The Electoral Commission wishes to notify the General Public that officers from the Ghana Police Service yesterday interrogated the Commission’s District Electoral Officer (DEO) for Afadjato South in the Volta Region regarding the transportation of Election Materials in a personal vehicle without Police escort. The Police subsequently took possession of the items.

The Commission’s policy dictates that its Officers are to transport all Election Materials in official vehicles, with Police escort as necessary. The Commission will carry out its own internal inquiries while also collaborating with the Police in their investigations.

We wish to reassure the Public that although the Officer violated the Commission’s policy, such actions will not, in any manner, compromise the elections in the Afadjato South Constituency.
Thank you.
